Letters of Recommendation

If you are a student planning to apply to a healthcare graduate program in 2023 (for anticipated matriculation in 2024), the time to start requesting a verbal commitment from your letter writers is NOW!

Whether you are Pre-Med, Pre-PA, Pre-Vet, Pre-Dental, Pre-Pharmacy, Pre-PT, Pre-OT, or interested in another graduate allied health profession, all students should be actively thinking about seeking letters of recommendation (LOR). LOR's are a critical component of a competitive Holistic Pre-Health Portfolio. The strongest letters are those that are written as result of a longitudinal relationship with the letter writer, resulting in the narrative highlighting a student's growth, development, character, skills, accomplishments, and leadership.

Navigating the LOR process can be confusing, as there are different types of LOR's (i.e, individual, letter packet, and committee letter), the number of LOR's vary depending on the graduate program, and students are encouraged to think carefully about asking a wide variety of letter writers who can offer written support from a myriad of lenses: academia, clinical, volunteer, leadership, supervisory, and research, to name a few.

Additional questions I can help to answer:

  • How should I request my letters of recommendation (in person, phone, or email)?

  • What should I say when I ask for a letter of recommendation?

  • Who should write my letters of recommendation?

  • How/where will my letter writers submit their letter?

  • Can I reuse a LOR that was submitted in a previous cycle?
